Now this is an interesting EP. I don't have any idea where this girl is from. What I can say that she does have some sort of charisma and style to her, even though it seems to be unpolished in some areas. I was really diggin' the fact that, even though the reproductions of her CD aren't professional, she did tag up her CD to let us know that she has a hand in its reproduction. I give her brownie points for that one alone. She reminds me of a hybrid of Freestyle Fellowship and Living Legends: she tends to have an easy going feel to her flow, all the while fluctuating her voice to the beat. She tends to remind me of a sing songyI don't know. She has style, and I'm glad for that. "Intro" has an old school feel to it just to show that she has respect to the throwback style that actually gave birth to the hip hop that exists today. Since revisiting old times is evident in the way we dress and even rhyme nowadays, it is evident that she has to pay respects to the past. "5 Minutes Late" and "Drowning" are conceptually deep in my own sense of rhyme schemes. "5 Minutes Later" gives an explanation towards who Eekwol is in an inward perspective. "Drowning" is a song that reaches out to those that seem lost within their own existences. She tries to show how things have been for her and gives insight that life can "drown" you sometimes: "Think of me/when you feel yourself drowning/ and dream of it/ the dream my voice is astounding/ Just feel my words/ wherever it is, wherever you are/ I'm not that hard to reach/ Just release your fallen star." Nice lyrics for a chorus. "Too Sick" is a song of even more constituent variety. It tells a story that is worthy of listening. It deals with (I think) a form of abuse, whether literal or figurative. "Risin Spirits", "Wilderness Survivors" and "Hear that Sound" round off a pretty interesting and nice EP. The only thing I really have to say bad about this EP is maybe about the sound quality of it all. It seems like that "Living Legend" quality of back in the day (remember 4-track Avengers, anyone?). However, with the right amount of time, equipment, and budget, Eekwol will get to the point where she is really comfortable with what she does and the beats will be even more moving. When this happens, she will make a name for herself. F'Real. - Darcwonn |
