Nextraterrestrials are on some military steez recently. Stubs has teamed with Governor Bolts and Moves to release a few tracks as war veterans Contrabanned, and now there's The Corps, Nextra's six-man, Ottawa-based collective that includes Aleus, previously the rhyme partner of Stubs in Isolated Showers. Original Supreme Being Unit producer Kelron Magnanimous provides the musical backdrop with a lot of synthetic beats. When the keys are used to make some heavy basslines, like on "Ottabot City Remix" and "Mr Mister," the synth works, but then there are the painfully cheesy moments when Kelron uses too much high-end. And when an album is entitled Freedom Sold Separately by The Corps, you'd expect more war topics than just "Armshouse" and "Gross Point Blank." Instead we get the typical braggadocio and lessons on saving hip hop. Atleast with five MCs - Aleus, Mr. I/O, Wing Able, Tawfeeq and Longstayer - and a mix of solo and group cuts, there's a fair bit of variety, even if Aleus and Mr. I/O are the only ones that are consistently tight. The Corps may not be the best Nextra has to offer, but Freedom Sold Separately is a successful first mission.
